Effect of Ionized Alkaline Water on Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Abstract
This study has been done from Jan. 1, 1996 to May 31, 1996 to assess the effect of ionized alkaline water upon patients who complained gastrointestinal symptoms, such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, epigastric discomfort, postprandial pressure, stomachache, diarrhea and constipation. The effect was assessed by the changes of severity measured before and after treatment. The patients who had been treated with the water have been found significantly improved in postprandial pressure(p=0.0277) and epigastric discomfort(p=0.0795) when compared with those treated with placebo. The values related to other symptoms, however, did not show any remarkable disparity between the treated and those not treated. It may be concluded, therefore, that the ionized alkaline water is effective for the improvement of postprandial pressure and epigastric discomfort symptoms, although no long-term post-examination has been conducted on the sampled group and hence any firm assertion is a bit premature at this stage.
